Alberta's Latest Immigration Draws Target Hundreds of Foreign Workers, Spotlight on Priority Sectors

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) recently announced its latest draw results for the period of July 3 to July 16, 2025. In just two weeks, the program conducted six separate draws, issuing invitations to apply for a provincial nomination to skilled foreign workers across various industries and occupations, highlighting the province's ongoing efforts to address critical labor shortages.

Invited candidates were selected for their professional experience and their ability to fill essential roles in Alberta's economy.

Draw Results Breakdown: July 3-16

The six draws held during this period varied in size and minimum score requirements. Four of these were conducted through the Alberta Express Entry stream, which is aligned with the federal Express Entry system.

The detailed draw results are as follows:

Draw DateStreamMinimum ScoreNumber of Invitations
July 16, 2025Alberta Express Entry Stream – Law Enforcement Pathway49<10
July 11, 2025Alberta Opportunity Stream72269
July 9, 2025Dedicated Health Care Pathway – non-Express Entry5332
July 8, 2025Alberta Express Entry Stream – Priority Sectors (Aviation)5320
July 4, 2025Alberta Express Entry Stream – Priority Sectors (Agriculture)6415
July 3, 2025Dedicated Health Care Pathway – Express Entry6236

The majority of invitations in this round were issued through the Alberta Opportunity Stream, which invited 269 candidates. This stream is primarily designed for temporary foreign workers who are already employed full-time in Alberta and hold a full-time job offer from an Alberta employer in an eligible occupation.

2025 Immigration Strategy: Focus on Priority Sectors

Earlier this year, the AAIP announced that its invitation strategy for the Alberta Express Entry stream in 2025 would heavily target specific priority sectors. These sectors include:

  • Construction
  • Agriculture
  • Aviation
  • Healthcare

In addition to these priority sectors, the stream also operates three dedicated pathways: the Dedicated Health Care Pathway, the Accelerated Tech Pathway, and the Law Enforcement Pathway, which held a draw in this period.

Annual Quota Usage and Future Outlook

As of July 16, 2025, the AAIP has also provided a transparent look at its annual nomination allocation and the current status of its candidate pools, offering crucial insights for prospective applicants.

Stream2025 Nomination AllocationNominations Issued to DateNominations RemainingCandidates in Pool

Dedicated Health Care Pathway (Express Entry & non-EE)5002512491,623
Alberta Express Entry – Priority Sectors (All)4052441614,302

Of significant note for applicants is that competition for the Alberta Opportunity Stream has reached a fever pitch. With as many as 40,623 Expressions of Interest (EOI) currently in the pool and only 984 nomination spots remaining for the year, applicants face exceptionally high competition.

Overall, the AAIP has a total nomination allocation of 4,875 for 2025. As of July 16, it has issued 2,895 nominations, with 1,980 remaining for the rest of the year. Furthermore, officials noted that there are still 2,311 applications in the program’s inventory awaiting processing.

In conclusion, Alberta is strategically leveraging its provincial nominee program to precisely select the talent most needed for its economic development from the global pool. For individuals considering immigration to Canada, closely monitoring the AAIP's priority sectors and accurately assessing one's competitiveness within the relevant candidate pool will be key to a successful nomination.

Canada Welcomed 393,750 New Permanent Residents in 2025, as Immigration Policy Entered a Phase of Slower and More Stable Growth
Canada welcomed 393,750 new permanent residents in 2025, down from 483,655 in 2024 and 471,820 in 2023, indicating that federal immigration policy has moved away from the high-growth post-pandemic phase toward a period more focused on sustainability and system capacity. Under the government’s existing plan, the 2025 total came very close to the annual target of 395,000. Looking ahead, Canada also plans to stabilize permanent resident targets at 380,000 per year from 2026 to 2028. At the same time, compared with the moderate reduction in permanent immigration, temporary resident numbers are set to decline more sharply, reflecting Ottawa’s attempt to strike a new balance among labour market needs, housing pressures, pressure on public services, and the pace of population growth.

Canada Changes How Super Visa Income Requirements for Parents and Grandparents Are Calculated, with New Rules Taking Effect on March 31
The Canadian federal government announced in Ottawa on March 20, 2026, that it will change how income requirements are calculated for the Parents and Grandparents Super Visa starting March 31, 2026. The new policy, to be implemented by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), is intended to make it easier for more families to qualify while ensuring that family members receive adequate financial support during their stay in Canada. Under the updated rules, a host’s income will no longer be assessed based only on the tax year immediately preceding the application. Instead, hosts may qualify by meeting the requirement in either of the two preceding tax years. In addition, if the host and co-signer have already met the required minimum percentage of income, the income of the visiting parent or grandparent may also be used to make up the remaining amount. IRCC said that all applications already in processing as of March 31, 2026, as well as those submitted on or after that date, will be assessed under the new criteria.
