Alberta Launches Intensive Provincial Nomination Draws, Opens Doors to Global Talent Across Five Streams

The immigration department of Alberta, Canada's energy-rich province, has been particularly active recently. According to official data, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) held five consecutive rounds of draws for various immigration streams between June 5 and 19, 2025, aiming to inject new vitality into the province's economy.

The core criteria for these draws focused on a candidate's professional background, their in-demand skills, and their ability to integrate into and contribute to the Alberta labour market.

June Draw Details: Five Streams Targeted with Precision

In just two weeks, the AAIP conducted targeted invitations across five different immigration streams. Each draw had a distinct cut-off score and number of invitations, reflecting the province's refined talent acquisition strategy.

Notably, three of these rounds were aligned with the federal Express Entry system. This means that candidates who receive a provincial nomination will be awarded an additional 600 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points, significantly increasing their chances of receiving a federal invitation for permanent residence.

The specifics of this draw series are as follows:

Draw DateStream / PathwayCut-off ScoreNumber of Invitations Issued
June 5Alberta Express Entry – Priority Sectors*7018
June 10Dedicated Health Care Pathway (Non-Express Entry)5333
June 17Tourism and Hospitality stream7139
June 18Alberta Express Entry – Law Enforcement Pathway51<10
June 19Alberta Express Entry – Accelerated Tech Pathway7322

(Note: The "Priority Sectors" for the Alberta Express Entry stream primarily include Construction, Agriculture, Aviation, and Healthcare.)

The AAIP had previously announced that its 2025 Express Entry stream invitations would prioritize candidates in the sectors listed above, in addition to conducting draws through its three dedicated pathways: the Dedicated Health Care Pathway, the Accelerated Tech Pathway, and the Law Enforcement Pathway.

2025 Nomination Allocation Analysis: A Mix of Opportunity and Competition

For prospective applicants worldwide, the status of Alberta's annual immigration quota is a critical piece of information.

As of June 19, the AAIP has issued 2,535 nomination certificates out of its total 2025 allocation of 4,875. This means that 2,340 nomination spots remain available for the rest of the year.

The table below provides a deeper look into the allocation, usage, and competition within the candidate pools (Expression of Interest - EOI) for the streams involved in these recent draws:

StreamNomination AllocationNominations IssuedNominations RemainingEOIs in Candidate Pool
Alberta Express Entry – Priority Sectors*4051992064,111
Dedicated Health Care Pathway (Non-EE)5002082921,568
Tourism and Hospitality stream245181646,048
Alberta Express Entry – Law Enforcement Pathway20<10N/A111
Alberta Express Entry – Accelerated Tech Pathway14681653,397

The data shows that while opportunities exist, competition in some streams has become intense. For example, the Tourism and Hospitality stream has over 6,000 candidates in its pool competing for only 64 remaining spots, indicating immense pressure. In contrast, competition in the Dedicated Health Care Pathway and the Law Enforcement Pathway is comparatively milder.

Furthermore, the AAIP notes that there are currently 2,657 submitted nomination applications in its processing inventory. This indicates sustained high interest from global applicants in the province's immigration programs, making processing times a key factor to watch in the coming months.

In summary, Alberta is leveraging an active and targeted immigration strategy to attract skilled professionals who can quickly fill gaps in its labour market. For prospective applicants, closely monitoring AAIP draw announcements and strategically aligning their profiles with the needs and competition levels of a specific stream will be crucial for securing a successful nomination.

QS 2026 Best Student Cities Revealed: Four Canadian Cities in Top 100
Global higher education analyst Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has recently released its 2026 Best Student Cities ranking. Four Canadian cities—Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and Ottawa—have secured spots in the top 100. While these cities are lauded for their excellent student feedback, diversity, and university quality, their overall scores are weighed down by consistently low marks in affordability. Notably, all four cities have seen a significant drop in their rankings compared to the previous year. This trend not only reflects a broader challenge faced by North American cities but also introduces new factors for international students to consider when planning their education in Canada.

Canada's Parents and Grandparents Program Set to Open for Invitations

For sponsors who do not receive an invitation this round, or for families who were unable to enter the pool in recent years, the Super Visa remains an important pathway for parents and grandparents to reunite with family in Canada for long-term stays.

Policy Reversal: Canada Postpones Tightening of PGWP Rules, More International Students to Benefit
In a surprise announcement, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has revealed it will postpone the implementation of a highly-watched measure to tighten eligibility for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Certain study programs slated for removal from PGWP eligibility on June 25, 2025, will now remain eligible until early 2026. This adjustment not only safeguards students who applied for study permits during the policy transition period but has also temporarily increased the total number of PGWP-eligible programs, marking a significant boon for students in non-degree college programs, who are the primary group affected.

Shift in Immigration Policy Triggers Ripple Effect: As Temporary Residents Decline, Rents in Major Canadian Cities See First Drop
Recent measures by the Canadian federal government to tighten policies concerning temporary residents are having a noticeable impact on the local housing market. The latest data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) indicates that a decline in international students and foreign workers has led to reduced rental demand. Consequently, major cities including Toronto and Vancouver experienced their first year-over-year drop in asking rents in recent memory during Q1 2025. Despite this softening, high rent-to-income ratios suggest that housing affordability remains a major challenge for new immigrants and local residents alike.

Meanwhile, Manitoba extended 67 invitations on July 10, prioritizing international students who graduated from its institutions and skilled workers identified through "Strategic Recruitment Initiatives." These moves clearly reflect the unique immigration strategies each province is deploying based on its economic and labor market needs.

Canada Tightens Temporary Foreign Worker Policy: 26 Major Cities Halt Processing of Low-Wage LMIA Applications
On July 11, the Canadian government updated its list of restricted regions for the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). According to the latest directive, 26 Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs) across the country will suspend the processing of "low-wage stream" Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) applications due to unemployment rates at or exceeding the 6% threshold. This measure is a continuation of a policy announced by the federal government in early 2024, aimed at protecting job opportunities for local residents in areas with high unemployment. The expansion of this list, which includes major immigration destinations like Toronto and Vancouver, undoubtedly has profound implications for many foreign nationals and their employers seeking to obtain or extend work permits for low-wage positions.
