Alberta Targets Healthcare Sector in New Immigration Draw, Inviting 36 Professionals

The province of Alberta has once again extended invitations to professional talent in the healthcare sector, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening its medical workforce through immigration. In a new draw held on June 3, 2025, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) issued invitations to apply for provincial nomination to a targeted group of candidates.

The draw exclusively invited 36 candidates who had a valid job offer from an Alberta employer in the healthcare industry. Receiving a provincial nomination provides these professionals with a significant advantage in their journey to obtaining Canadian permanent residence.

Draw Details and Eligibility Criteria

This latest selection round was conducted through the AAIP’s Dedicated Healthcare Pathway, which operates in alignment with the federal Express Entry system. This marks the sixth draw of its kind this year.

Notably, the minimum required score for a candidate to receive an invitation was only 60. This relatively low threshold indicates that candidates who meet the specific occupational and job offer requirements have a strong chance of being invited.

To be eligible for this pathway, candidates were required to meet a series of conditions:

  1. Express Entry Profile: Candidates must have an active profile in the federal Express Entry pool and be eligible under at least one of the three federal programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST), or the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
  2. CRS Score: A minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 300 was required.
  3. Eligible Occupation and Job Offer: The candidate’s primary occupation in their Express Entry profile must be one of the eligible healthcare professions, and they must hold a genuine, full-time job offer from an Alberta employer.
  4. Regulatory Requirements: Candidates had to provide proof that they meet the licensing or certification requirements of the appropriate regulatory body for their profession in Alberta.
  5. Intent to Reside: A clear intention to live and work in Alberta must be demonstrated.

Nine Eligible Healthcare Professions

The pathway specifies nine eligible professions. Candidates must be able to prove they are authorized to practice by the corresponding regulatory body:

Registered nurseCollege of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
Licensed practical nurseCollege of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA)

Analysis of 2025 Nomination Allocations

For 2025, Alberta has been allocated a total of 4,875 nominations from the federal government. To date, the province has issued 2,276 nominations across its various immigration streams, meaning approximately 47% of its annual quota has been filled.

For the highly sought-after Dedicated Healthcare Pathways (which includes both Express Entry and non-Express Entry streams), the AAIP provides combined data. As of this report:

  • 2025 Nomination Allocation: 500
  • Nominations Issued in 2025: 170
  • Nominations Remaining for 2025: 330
  • Expressions of Interest (EOIs) in the pool: 1,507

These figures reveal that while Alberta continues to issue invitations, the number of candidates in the pool far exceeds the remaining nomination spots, indicating fierce competition. Prospective applicants are advised to prepare their documentation thoroughly and in a timely manner to maximize their chances in future draws.

Additionally, the AAIP website notes that the program is currently processing applications received on or before April 10, 2025, providing a timeline for current applicants. Overall, Alberta's demand for healthcare talent remains strong and consistent, presenting a significant opportunity for qualified professionals worldwide.

Nova Scotia Overhauls Provincial Nominee and AIP Selection System with New EOI Model
On November 28, 2025, Nova Scotia announced a major shift in its immigration intake system, confirming that all submissions under the Nova Scotia Provincial Nominee Program (NSPNP) and the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) will now be processed through an Expression of Interest (EOI) model. Under the new rules, all submissions—regardless of submission date—are considered EOIs, and having a case ID or meeting eligibility criteria no longer guarantees file processing. The province will conduct periodic draws based on current labor market and economic priorities, with priority sectors such as healthcare, construction, trades, STEM, natural resources, and manufacturing. The shift aligns with broader trends driven by reduced provincial nomination allocations from IRCC. With increased immigration targets set for 2026, applicants may soon see improved chances of receiving selections.
